Medicare supplement insurance plans come in 10 different varieties. They are named on English alphabets ranging from A through N. Companies charge differently for any particular insurance policy. Medicare Rights Center has found that the plans C and F are the most popular ones, as they cover major benefits and yet they are cheaper compared to the others. All these plans have different premium prices that increase with increase in the number of benefits. The cheapest one among all these is Plan A. This plan offers minimum benefits as compared to the others.

Introduction of Medigap

People need some healthcare benefits that are not included or partially included in Medicare. Therefore, they go for Medicare supplemental plan to cover the gaps in Medicare. Medigap or Medicare supplement is a form of insurance policy that is meant for people who already have Medicare insurance but need some extra benefit. These plans are not offered by the federal government. Private insurance companies are responsible for this. However, they have to follow the rules and regulations of the federal and state government. By opting for these policies, an insured person can get relieved of the additional expenses that Medicare plan A and B do not pays such as hospital stay, deductibles, etc.

Is Medigap for you?

People, who are enrolled in Medicare part A and B and are 65 or above in age can go for Medicare supplement plans. In order to have a hassle-free no medical screening enrollment, you should choose the period within six moths of turning 65 or while you are enrolling for Medicare Part B. This rule is however, not applicable for people suffering from social security disability and end-stage renal failures. These people can choose Medicare supplement at any age. However, if you go for this insurance after the open period, you have to undergo medical screening.

Precautions while buying a Medigap policy

If you are enrolled for Medicare Advantage plan, you should not buy the Medigap insurance plans as the benefits of this insurance is already covered by the advantage plan. Before buying any of the Medicare supplement plan, understand all the rules and details of them. Choose the one that you feel can give you maximum return. No other private insurance plan is compatible with Medicare supplement plans.
